Animal collective are a group of experimental musicians based in New York. The band members are Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), Avey Tare (David Portner) and Geologist (Brian Weitz). The line up of the band can vary for records released as Animal Collective. Paw tracks is their label and other artists such as Ariel Pinks, The Peppermints and Terrestrial Tones have released on it. The band’s sound is diverse, experimental, and hard to categorise and open to much experimentation. Childhood meetings at school in Baltimore County led to the formation of Animal Collective. The sharing and swapping instruments led to various homemade recordings.
Panda was incredibly prolific in his early years and he and Deakin created Panda’s eponymous debut from these recordings. The label Soccer Stars was born and Panda Bear was released. At this time Avey had begun work on Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished. Panda were invited to play drums on this album and it was released under the Avey Tare and Panda Bear moniker. Soccer Star slowly formed into the Animal Label.
Moving to New York in 2000 the essence of the collaboration grew, with live appearances in clubs around the city cementing the band’s status. With the arrival of Geologist they became the familiar form of the group.
The live material from this era appeared on Danse Manatee on the Catsup Plate label, which was released as Avey Tare, Panda and Geologist in 2001. The band became synonymous with creating their material live, recording it and then frequently retiring songs, never to be performed again. Hollinndagain sees the cementing of this process, with this album being recorded while the band were on the road with Black Dice. St Ives a small selective boutique record label run by Secretly Canadian released 300 copies of the album on limited edition vinyl. It was re-released again by Paw Tracks on CD as well as vinyl in October 2006.
Around this time Deakin started playing with the band. The result was Campfire songs on Catsup plate. Again an album that was recorded live in 2001 in Monkton, Maryland it’s five songs performed in a single take. To capture a back to basics campfire feel the album was recorded using one recorder straight to minidisc. Atmospheric field sounds were also overlaid. Further notoriety was gained in 2002 by an appearance on the album Invoke by Arto Lindsay.
Avey and Panda returned to a simpler form of composition touring for the large part of a year in 2004. Rusty Santos, a musician and friend, helped them to compose Sung Tongs, which was widely critically acclaimed for it’s flagrant textures and catchy melodies.
An introduction to Vashti Bunyan through Kieran Hebden led to a collaboration, with Bunyan singing lead vocals on three tracks that had not been used on Sung Tongs. As a result of the collaboration Fat Cat signed Vashti Bunyan, who ended a thirty-year period of artistic drought, by writing and releasing a second album.
Feels was Animal Collective’s highly anticipated seventh album. It did not disappoint, meeting critical acclaim from fans and critics alike. Post release a huge tour was announced with them going to Australia and New Zealand too as well a s becoming regulars on the European and North American festival circuit.
The respected independent label Domino Records announced they in January 2007 that they will be releasing the then unnamed new album.
Strawberry Jam saw the light of day on September 11th 2007. Again critical praise was flowing particularly for songs such as For Reverend Green and Derek.
