In the early 90s, albums and singles were distributed using CDs and cassette tapes. I remember looking for Def Leppard’s Hysteria and Mr. Big’s Big, Bigger and Biggest at HMV. All you have to do is sign up with names such as Last.fm, MySpace.com and a host of others websites which assist in doing so for absolutely free. All you have to do is create a profile of the band which includes providing details and pictures of the band. Most importantly, you have the option of a free music upload by which you can share your songs.

Interestingly, Alterhit offers both these services mentioned above with a slight twist. You have to create a profile and upload songs of your band.  Alterhits pays bands a % of sale value but also pays “Friends” that help to sell music 10% of every sale that happens on their homepage. They can also update their profiles by adding their favorite musician profiles so that they can continue to check on the latest updates as well. This also gives the band additional visibility, as the listener’s profile displays band information for the other listeners in the online community. In addition, the listeners are also given incentives in order to participate in promoting the bands which is what makes the whole initiative unique to its counterparts.
