Unsigned bands

What makes unsigned bands different

If you’ve watched the movie ‘The School of Rock’, you’ll know who Zack Mooneyham is and you would’ve gained ground on Rock’s primary intent a.k.a ‘sticking it to the man’.

Let’s face it: the Rock music that we know of today, has sold out to the corporate world which is rather self-defeating in purpose because it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the bottom line of Rock music is all about rebellion and bringing about a revolution through music. And if you didn’t know, well now you do.

Most of these bands that wanted to bring about social change and awareness were of course, unsigned bands. Yes, you could call them indie bands with little or no help as well as given the enviable task of making it on their own.

Er… well, I’m not here to give you a history lesson but in this day and age things have without a shadow of a doubt changed with time. You have musicians who are more than happy to make the four chords per song on the G major scale namely G major - C major – D Seventh and perhaps an A Minor as well, that too, in Rock. So, the big creative-control decisions are made by the corporates, and of course they control the money as well. Listen to Dream Theater’s ‘Falling into Infinity’ which almost tore the band’s reputation to shreds until someone wisely stepped in, and gave them full creative control. And if the kind of music that has to be played is to be decided by people who would like to fill their pockets by dishing out radio-friendly music, then the actual musicians are nothing but ‘session musicians’ who are in it for the ‘green’. And that’s how it works normally but not necessarily all the time.

This is what makes indie labels and its music so different from the big four top record companies. It’s no surprise that most musicians who’ve made it create their own labels so that they can provide an easier path for unsigned bands or artistes to unleash their creativity at full-throttle. And it’s a balancing act that is not only stubbornly idealistic but is not necessarily financially sounds in a realistic sense. Money is very important, but it should not take precedence over the art-form which is music in this case.

And this is what Alterhit really would like to create, a platform where a balance between the realistic demands are met yet not stemming the flow of artistic creativity by encouraging indie labels and indie bands to use Alterhit.com to reach a global audience.
